coexistence of people who share a slight difference in belief system, race or values. The incessant lose of lives and properties are proof to that assertion. The most recent one which took place in the beautiful City of Paris, on Friday, the 13th, where over 150 people lost their lives, and properties worth millions of dollars destroyed, threw the whole world into mourning and we are yet to recover from the shock. My sincere sympathy goes to the families who lost loved ones and the good people of France for being a victim of such a terrible evil. The world shares in your pains and is solidly standing with you and will fight these evil with you.
Yes, the manner and swift response the good people of France got from the rest of the world is a show of collective grief and shared efforts. No one is left out, Facebook went as far as changing their "safety check" policy to reach out to French people and also added a support "temporary change your profile picture", which has the French National flag, to show solidarity for them. This in my opinion is truly what the world needs, and should be, a true FAMILY.
However, the controversy the attention the French people got generated is yet to settle. So many people questioned the integrity of Facebook, which in their opinion acted unfairly, by strongly supporting the French people while on the other hand has remained silent on other countries of the world who are in themselves witnessing and living with more terrible incidences that are worst than what befall the French people.
In Nigeria, for instance, which is the biggest black nation in the world and among the highest users of Facebook in the world, thousands of people are being killed every now and then, properties worth millions have been lost, to the evil activities of terrorists, and yet, the world, nor Facebook have not dedicated a "button", or raised awareness for a support. This to a fair world, is unfair. It begs for an answer to the question, are there lives that are more sacred than others?, or are there people who deserve the horrible things that happen to them?.
Moreso, Nigerians sympathized with our french brothers and prayed for them with the rest of the world, but what raised an eyebrow was the fact that most Nigerians went as far as using the temporary profile pictures which has the French national flag introduced as a support for the good people of France as their Facebook profile picture, when their are more tragic incidents here and are living in more horrible conditions worst than what could ever happen in France, and no one is saying or doing anything about them. Is that how life has become meaningless to us or how deep we have lost our sense of identity?.
It is a big pity, which requires a fundamental fixing.
I pray and sympathize with France but my heart goes for Nigeria and Nigerians.
