Online news platform, Premium Times has described as false and
misleading, the claims by President Muhammadu Buhari and his party, the
All Progressives Congress (APC), that a key campaign document, “My
Covenant With Nigerians” did not emerge from them.
According to Premium Times, it can authoritatively report that the
policy and research directorate of the APC presidential campaign, headed
by former Governor Kayode Fayemi, produced the covenant document. It
also reported that Egghead Odewale, who worked at the headquarters of
the presidential campaign in Abuja, sent a PDF version of the document
to the news platform on March 12 before another campaign official
emailed a word version to reporters on March 16.
Vanguard also
published Buhari’s covenant with Nigerians on March 17. The newspaper
quoted Buhari to have said that his covenant was derived from the
manifesto of his party and his on the ground experience during his
recent travels across the country.
Premium Times also reported
that “The Covenant With Nigeria” was one of the documents the Ahmed
Joda-led Transition Committee used in producing an 800-page report which
Buhari is believed to rely on as it details the steps he has to take to
fix Nigeria.|
Babatunde Fashola, whilst still Lagos governor and
was in charge of fundraising for the campaign, referred to the covenant
document in a campaign speech delivered on March 23 at a meeting of APC
governors at the Banquet Hall of the Imo State Government House,
Owerri. Premimu Times, therefore opined that by disowning the document,
President Buhari and the APC are not only being dishonest but are also
being deceitful.
One of the several promises of President Buhari
as contained in one of the documents used in campaigning for him is that
he would declare his assets and also make the declaration of assets a
precondition to be appointed into offices. Nigerians are still waiting
