Why Plateau crisis has lingered — Police Commissioner

Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Nasiru Oki, has attributed the protracted unrest in the state to possession of illegal arms and ammunition by people in the state.

Mr. Oki made the disclosure Thursday, in an address at the official launch of European Union funded projects aimed at ending incessant killing of people in the state.

r said until illegal arms and ammunition in possession of non-security officials are mopped up, attacks on communities and persons might continue unabated.
On her part, the coordinator, National Human Right Commission, North Central zone, Grace Pam, observed that lack of political will to bring to book suspected attackers is the reason for the prolonged strife.
Speaking earlier, the representative of the EU delegation in Nigeria, Allan Munday, who is the head of political governance of the EU, said they were concerned by the persistent killings of human beings in the state.
According to him, EU sought to resolve the Plateau crisis through economic empowerment for people bedevilled by the incessant attacks.
Mr. Munday argued that the crisis is as a result abject poverty and unemployment, stressing that the grants were meant for their partners, Apurimac, Search for Common Ground (SFCG) and GIZ, to carry out economic empowerment projects to empower the poor, particularly persons prone to insecurity.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that Local Government Areas of Riyom, Barkinladi, Mangu and Bokkos are selected for the empowerment programme for their susceptibility to conflict.
On its part, Plateau State Government noted that the crises bedevilling Nigeria were signs of end time, saying Nigerians should return to God.
The deputy governor of Plateau State Sonni Tyoden, who was represented by a Senior Special Assistant in the office of the governor, Patrick Mafuyai, said that the Plateau crisis hitherto seen as religious and ethnic crisis has become free for all fight affecting every citizens.
